Have you cleaned your makeup brushes lately?
Yes, I’m talking to you. Or maybe I’m even talking to me.
I get it. Cleaning our brushes feels like a chore. It’s one of those tasks that rarely makes it to the top of our to-do list. But I’ll make it a super simple addition with this DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner.
Brushes and Breakouts
I’m sure you know that regular brush maintenance is one of the many keys to clear skin. And if you’re acne-prone like me, you don’t need any additional fuel to the fire. I’m very much about treating acne through nutrition, products, and lifestyle. But let’s not forget the small details that count.
So let’s not skip this step, shall we?
Whether you use your brushes daily or once a week, they require some maintenance, k? If you’re using them on your face or storing them in your bathroom, they are collecting gunk. I’m talking sebum, dust, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Gross. Each day we let that s*** sit on our brushes, the more bacteria they harbor. And each day we get up, we swirl that crap all over our face.
Brush Maintenance
First, I’m not expecting you to clean those brushes on the daily. After all, does anyone have the time or patience for that? And your makeup brush cleaner doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, a DIY version will do. But if we can check this box once a week, you’ll be doing your skin a major favor.
Before you start, make sure to whip up a batch of DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner (scroll for recipe). Pour a few drops of the cleanser into the palm of your hand. Swirl those brushes around and work the cleanser into the brush. Then, rinse the brush clean with running water. Be sure to avoid the base of the brush head as this can degrade the glue that holds the brush together. Continue to rinse until the water runs clear. When clean, squeeze out the excess moisture with a clean towel. Lay the brushes horizontal on a paper towel to air dry.
See, simple.
