4 Reasons Antibiotics Didn’t Fix Your SIBO

Let me guess, you’re here because antibiotics didn’t fix your SIBO. I work with a lot of gut issue clients. The sad part is, I’m usually not the first practitioner they’ve seen. Time and time again, they come to me with a SIBO relapse. They’ve talked to the doctors, they’ve went low FODMAP, and they’ve done a round (or two or three) of antibiotics. It worked for awhile, but in a matter of weeks or months, they feel like crap again. That’s where I come in.

This post isn’t here to trash the use of antibiotics with SIBO. The antibiotics can certainly be effective at their job –> killing bacteria. But if you’re protocol is only focused on killing bacteria, you can bet your gut issues are going to come back. In my opinion, there are 4 reasons antibiotics didn’t fix your SIBO.

Removing bacteria is only the first step in overcoming your SIBO, you and your practitioner can’t forget to address the following 4 steps if you want to be successful:

4 Reasons Antibiotics Didn’t Fix Your SIBO

1. BIOFILMS

Biofilm support should be used alongside your antibiotics or antimicrobials herb. Biofilm is a Biofilm densely packed bacterial community that secretes proteins and other substances. Those substances form a matrix that protects the bacteria/parasites from antimicrobials, the immune system, and other stressors. A biofilm disruptor will help expose the bacteria and make the antimicrobials more effective. My go-to product for addressing biofilms is Nuethix Biofilm Resolve.

2. DIGESTIVE ENZYMES

Digestive enzymes often need to be supported when treating SIBO, many people do not produce sufficient amounts. For some people, a HCL based supplement will do the trick. Others need more of a pancreatic enzyme blend. When I feel my clients need full coverage, I use a product called Utilyze that contains a combination of the two.

3. GUT REPAIR

SIBO and other gut disorders often lead to gut inflammation, weakened intestinal wall, damage, or changes to the immune system in the gut. This can happen from bacterial imbalances and antimicrobial use. My top three products for healing the digestive tract are: Gut Tissue Repair, UltraInflamX, and Glutagenics. These products help to restore the gut lining and secretory IgA. Secretory Immunoglobulin A is an immunoglobulin in the digestive tract. It represents your body’s “first line of defense” against pathogens in the GI tract. It plays a major role in helping to maintain balance in the microbiome and protecting against exposure to food-derived antigens.

4. MICROBIOME RESTORATION

It’s an absolute necessity to restore levels of the beneficial bacteria that have been destroyed. Antimicrobials, especially antibiotics, will kill both the good and bad bacteria. If the good bacteria are not replaced it leaves your gut vulnerable to the same exact problem you tried to get rid of. Beneficial strains often contain a combination of the following bacteria stains: Lactobacillus acidophilus‚ Bifidobacterium bifidum‚ Bifidobacterium longum‚ Lactobacillus rhamnosus‚ Bifidobacterium breve‚ Lactobacillus casei‚ Streptococcus thermophilus, and spore based strains in some cases. My top picks are ProSpore Plus and UltraFlora Balance.
